Backyard to Table

I planted a garden this spring.

I set up a greenhouse and filled every container with dirt and started my garden. I bought seeds and my “Backyard to Table” journey began.

I’ve tried this before and I was skeptical.

I’ve done container gardening and crate gardening and always came up short. I wanted my garden to thrive this year. I knew I planted too many seeds, but my thought was, not everything will grow.

I used galvanized gardening beds this year and researched the perfect combination of soil and manure and Peat moss to start with. I had been composting yard waste for a few years and added those rotten goodies to the mix, too. I read that a great barrier for under the beds was cardboard boxes and thanks to Amazon, I had plenty to lay as the base.

After the beds were set up and ready to go, I took down my portable greenhouse and planted the goodies in the beds. A few of the seeds I planted did not grow, which I anticipated.

What I didn’t anticipate was the amount that grew and continues to grow.

I’ve seen the Farm to Table as it pertains to Bob Evans and farmers markets, etc., and thought, “How cool, it is that simple – farm to your table.” I have a new appreciation for it now. Our family has been enjoying lettuce, cucumbers, green beans, radishes, turnips, more lettuce, zucchini, and even more lettuce… did I mention lettuce?

Just the other day, as we were eating a delish salad (lots of lettuce) for dinner, my husband asked me if it tasted even better knowing it came from our backyard to our table; his question caused me to pause and think.

Yes, my answer was, “Yes, yes, it does.”

From seed to greenhouse to MY backyard and then to MY table, “Backyard to Table” is legit. Now, the only question is… can I talk my husband into a farm?

Hey local mommas! I grew up in Centerville, but I now live in Wilmington with my husband Tony. Together we have 6 kids, Joe, and his wife Allison, Austin, and his wife Hannah, Sydney and her husband Hayden, Andrew and his wife Lauren and our littles, Max and Eli. Did I mention we are a little nuts starting over with this parenting thing when we are 45+? We are officially adding new titles to our names in 2022- Tiki and Jeep (our version of Grandma and Grandpa). My husband and I are both ministers, and we get to work together in a local church. We were both married before and brought our families together in 2010. After a few years of marriage we felt God's leading for us to adopt. We added Max to our family in 2014 and Eli joined us in 2017, our quiver is officially full! Blending our family has been an adventure! Add some ex-spouses and two birth mommas and we have ourselves a crazy crew! Coffee is my love language. The beach is my happy place and I long to have my toes in the sand. I love being part of the team at Dayton Mom Collective.
