Spreading Awareness for Pet Cancer Awareness Month

0

November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to educating pet parents about cancer. Just like in humans, cancer is one of the leading health threats for our companion animals. It’s estimated that 6 million dogs and a similar number of cats will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone.

While these statistics are discouraging, the good news is that veterinary medicine has made huge strides in diagnosing and treating pet cancer. When caught and treated early, many dogs and cats can go on to live happy, long lives even after a cancer diagnosis.

But pet parents play a critical role in catching it early.

That’s why Pet Cancer Awareness Month aims to share important information on the signs, screening, treatment, and prevention of pet cancer. Here’s what you should know:

  • Watch for symptoms like lumps, swelling, sores, difficulty eating, lethargy, and weight loss. Catching cancer early dramatically improves outcomes.
  • Routine veterinary exams allow for early detection. Annual exams for adult pets and semi-annual exams for seniors are recommended.
  • Screening tests like radiographs, ultrasounds, and blood work can detect cancer before symptoms show.
  • Some common pet cancers include lymphoma, mammary gland tumors, mast cell tumors, and skin cancer. Discuss your breed’s risks with your veterinarian.
  • Treatment options often include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy.
  • Preventive care like nutritious food, exercise, and limiting sun exposure reduces cancer risk. Spaying/neutering can also decrease risk.

While cancer is devastating, awareness and early veterinary care give hope. This Pet Cancer Awareness Month, love on your beloved pet and schedule their next vet exam. Being informed and proactive is the best way to protect their health!
