My Son Passed Away During Labor {A Dog Saved Me}

Losing a child is an unimaginable tragedy no parent should ever have to face. When my oldest son tragically passed away during labor on Nov. 16, 2007, I felt like my world had ended. The grief was completely overwhelming. My days were filled with profound emptiness and sadness that seemed would never lift. I wasn’t sure I could go on living. The pain was so intense, it felt like it might swallow me whole.

A few months after his passing, a loved one surprised me with a puppy named Prissy.

I was desperate for a reason to find purpose in life, and this person thought a dog might do that for me. When I met Prissy, I had no idea just how much her unconditional love and comfort would help me live with my grief.

From the moment Prissy entered my home, her playful energy and affectionate cuddles started to soothe my heavy heart. Taking her for walks and playing fetch gave me a reason to get outside when I felt like isolating myself from the world. These daily walks gave a predictable rhythm to my days when everything felt off-balance. Having her depend on me for food and care gave me purpose when I felt directionless. Her enthusiasm for life and love helped motivate me to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Research shows that the companionship of dogs can release oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine – hormones that boost mood, ease stress, and enhance feelings of well-being. Petting a dog can lower cortisol and blood pressure.

And owning a dog provides opportunities for social interaction when grieving, which can be invaluable.

Simply taking your dog for a walk may lead to chance conversations with neighbors or other pet owners when you otherwise might isolate yourself in grief. And interacting with people, even in small talk about your dog, can lift your spirits and remind you that you are not alone in your pain. Animals facilitate human bonds that can make all the difference on the long, lonely road of mourning.

Prissy was my faithful companion throughout the darkness. She gave me exactly what I needed most in that darkest time – the unconditional devotion of a true friend. On days when the grief overwhelmed me, she never left my side.

Losing a loved one leaves an immense hole in your heart. Though no one can ever replace those who are no longer here, a devoted dog can provide comfort, purpose, and emotional support as you learn to live with grief. If you have suffered a tragic loss, consider opening your heart and home to an animal in need.

Their healing power might just help get you through.
