August Dayton Dozen: Guide to Family-Friendly Events

Summer is winding down, but there’s still some time to make a few more memories! Check out these fun events around town before the school bell rings!


DMB Bonus Pick of the Month

This event is a great opportunity for all local kids (age 5-12) to challenge themselves by participating in a fun event full of swimming, sports, and encouragement. As parents, we love seeing our kids get out and MOVE and this event does an amazing job reinforcing the importance (and fun) of exercise at the same time.

DMB Tip*** Kids will have help in the swim portion if needed. Swim float aids are allowed and lifeguards are in the water with the kids.


1. HVO Peach Festival @ Hidden Valley Orchard

DMB Tip***  Hidden Valley Orchard has new ownership as of January 2018 & many new events are popping up!

  • August 4, 11am-3pm

Enjoy some Georgia peaches, visit with the goats, and let your kids enjoy their barnyard play yard (small fee).

2. Dayton Mini Maker Faire @ Carillon Historical Park

DMB Tip*** Several great seminars will take place, so visit the website linked above to plan your visit!

  • Adult Tickets: $8 per adult (ages 18-59), $7 per senior citizen

Maker Faire is a gathering of fascinating, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. From engineers to artists to scientists to crafters, Maker Faire is a venue for these “makers” to show hobbies, experiments, projects.

3. Germanfest Picnic @ Riverscape MetroPark

DMB Tip***  Arrive hungry! There is some incredible food available for purchase!

Join us in our Biergarten and SpassPlatz, where you will find fabulous German food, plenty of German Beer on tap, schunkeling, toasting to “Ein Prosit”, and live musical entertainment all day long. There are races, a Kid Zone, craft booths, and more!

4. Day Out with Thomas @ LM&M Railroad, Lebanon OH

DMB Tip***  Arrive early before your ride time to explore the activities near the train station.

Thomas the Tank Engine visits Lebanon, OH on August 11,12, 18, & 19. Day Out With Thomas™ features a 25 minute train ride behind Thomas and access to an event site featuring a selection of children’s activities including a straw bale maze, bounce castles, potable mini golf, model train displays, balloon artists, the ability to visit with Sir Topham Hatt, and Thomas Wooden Railway™ train tables.

5. Family Fun Day @ Youngs Jersey Dairy

Michael’s House and Family Violence Prevention Center invite families of all sizes to come enjoy an afternoon of all-inclusive fun, food and entertainment at the beloved Young’s Jersey Dairy! They will provide food, ice cream, all-inclusive wrist bands to use for mini golf, driving range, “Movers and Shakers” and slide, plus have crafts for the children in the Picnic Shelter. 

6. Kidz Bop Live @ The Rose Music Center at The Heights

DMB Tip***  If you’ve never been to The Rose Music Center, it’s a great covered, open-air venue! No need to worry about rain!

7. Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival @ Community Park in Fairborn, OH

DMB Tip*** Kids can look forward to pony rides, train rides, and the Big Bounce.

This is a family-oriented event. There will be approximately 180 handmade arts and crafts booths and food vendors. You can enjoy the favorites such as steamed cooked sweet corn, pork chop sandwiches, and fresh cut watermelon. There will be art and crafts for everyone including candles, wood items, jewelry, watercolor and oil paintings, and much more. 

8. Brick Universe Dayton LEGO Fan Expo @ Dayton Convention Center

DMB Tip***  Visit the website linked above to plan your visit – there are lots of exciting things to experience!

Brick Universe, the premier convention for LEGO fans that has been featured on various news outlets, is heading to Dayton! Each day there is a morning session & an afternoon session. Buy your ticket according to which session you would like to attend!

9. Bacon Fest 2018 @ The Fraze Pavillion

DMB Tip***  Although this is an open-air festival, dogs are not allowed. Leave your bacon-loving pup at home, please.

Local restaurants will be on hand for you to sample all things bacon while local bands play on stage! Need we say more? 

10. August Market: Charm at the Farm  @ 4953 Bunnell Hill Rd., Lebanon, Ohio 45036

Charm at the Farm is an open air shopping vintage market located on a 56 acre farm in quaint Lebanon, OH, just north of Cincinnati. The best local artisans and shops come together only three fabulous weekends a year exclusively at Charm at the Farm. 11. 5th Annual Fulton Farms Sweet Corn Festival  @ Fulton Farms

DMB Tip***  This sweet little festival is worth the drive! Be sure to pack some extra water though, it’s still hot this time of year!

Farm Attractions: Barnyard with Farm animals, Free bounce houses for the kids, Roasted Sweetcorn, & Corn Shucking Contests for various age groups. Live entertainment, local craft vendors and food trucks, children’s play area, fresh produce, corn roast, farm animals, and much more.

12. Monarch Butterfly Bluegrass Festival  @ Buck Creek Nature Park in Springfield

DMB Tip***  Springfield is a bit of a drive from Dayton, but worth it – especially if the weather is nice!

A summer festival featuring live music, entertainment, artisan vendors, a Butterfly Walk, educational programs, children’s crafts, food trucks and more. Recreational Tree Climbing from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm for ages 8 and older, sponsored by the Clark County Soil and Water Conservancy District.
