Mom’s My Name and Dad Jokes are My Game

It’s been pretty entertaining at my house lately. About six months ago, my 5-year-old discovered joke telling and decided to start trying it out. Let’s just say that what is funny to a 5-year-old isn’t necessarily funny to an adult. His jokes never really landed all that well.

We would read joke books and identify a few that seemed easy to remember but when it came time to tell it at the dinner table, he would forget the punchline and the joke would fall apart. We would all half-heartedly laugh, big brother included, and then we would take turns telling jokes that actually made sense.

Fast forward to the present and we have been spending a lot of time together lately (thank you, COVID). Dad jokes have been our daily comic relief and we have really upped our game. Come to find out, we’re not the only ones!

While at work, my husband has been swapping Dad jokes with his co-worker that they each bring from their respective homes. Apparently Dad jokes are a thing and I have amassed quite a collection. Not to mention that one of our favorite daily activities has been to watch author Dan Gutman‘s “My Weird Read-A-Louds” on Facebook where he tells an age-appropriate joke-of-the-day. Thanks to all of this material, I feel like I can take my act on the road and sustain a 2-hour stand-up comedy routine with all of my Dad jokes. I’ve got jokes for days!

It’s no secret that life is hard right now.

We all need to laugh and it’s always good to find humor in whatever way that we can. Laughing is so important and, not to mention, good for you! According to the Mayo Clinic, laughter relieves stress, eases tension, improves your mood and even provides long-term effects like improving your immune system. Laughing together also builds happy memories and bonds during stressful times.

If you and your kiddos are in need of a smile, try out some Dad jokes and watch those frowns turn upside down. Here are a few of my favorites that are sure to become some of yours, too!

Caution: the following Dad jokes may cause smiling, laughter and general happiness. Proceed at your own risk.

Joke #1
Q. How do you make a tissue dance?
A. Put a little boogie in it!

Joke #2
Q. Why do seagulls fly over the sea?
A. Because if they flew over the bay, they’d be called bagels (bay gulls)!

Joke #3
Q. What did the pirate say on his 80th birthday?
A. (in your best pirate voice) AYE MATEY!

Joke #4
Q. Why was six afraid of seven?
A. Because seven ate nine!

Joke #5
Q. Where do ghosts go on vacation?
A. Lake Eeeerie!

Joke #6
Q. Where did the soldier hide his armies?
A. In his sleevies!

This last joke gets honorable mention. My 10-year-old made it up and wanted me to share it.

Q. What did the knight use for a shield?
A. Da fence (The fence/Defense)

Does your household have some favorites? Drop your Dad jokes in the comments. We’d love to hear them!
