Not Your Mama’s Soap Opera

1

As a child, I remember my mom watching daytime talk shows and soap operas. T.V. was off limits to us during the day, especially if the weather was nice. So what my mom watched rarely caught my attention beyond knowing she was watching “boring” things while folding the laundry. Little did I know then that that was my moms afternoon escape in a house run by kids.

Fast forward 25 years and here I am, the mom, folding laundry. Instead of watching soap operas, I listen to Podcasts.

I stumbled into the world of podcast during my last pregnancy. It started off slow, listening to ghost stories a few times a week. Then I started to explore and now a year later I listen to about 20 different podcasts, all varying in topics (ghost stories and true crime are my favorites currently). I listen to them off and on throughout each day. Listening has become part of my routine, my lifeline to the outside world.

Compared to our parents we are much more “connected” technologically than they could have ever imagined at our age. The world literally fits in our pockets. With so many of us on the go, whether that’s working, chauffeuring kids around, or doing daily mundane tasks, something like a podcast is much more accessible. Many of us don’t have time to just sit and watch a T.V. show anymore due to schedules and other responsibilities. However, throwing in some earbuds during our kid’s soccer practice or streaming audio in the car is totally doable.

As a stay-at-home mom, this is just one of the ways I function day in and day out. While my oldest is off at school, that leaves me home alone with an infant and two cats and I can tell you, the conversation is rather dull. So being able to stream something on my phone to pass the time is a big help. I also know everyone isn’t the same. So by all means, watch, listen, do whatever works best for you. If you’ve never listened to a podcast before ask around your group of friends, or do a google search on a topic you like. There’s bound to be a podcast or two hundred about that topic. You can also look into available audiobooks from your local library or other audiobook apps available on your phones marketplace. A new interest might just be a click away.

For fun, here’s the podcast that started it all for me!

If you’re already a podcast listener, what are your favorites?

  1. I’m a podcast junkie, too! Believe it or not, I actually look forward to washing the dishes because it’s when I know I can turn on a podcast and just listen (and the kids don’t usually come into the kitchen when I’m doing something as boring as washing the dishes!). Now I need to know what is on your podcast list!
