Kid-Friendly Indoor Activity Ideas {Free or Cheap}

Looking for things to do with a kiddo in the colder months ahead? Here are a few ideas to spark some interest in spending time outside the house while inside somewhere else.

Libraries

It’s no secret how much I LOVE our library systems. Most libraries have great open play items for kids, like a light box, puppet theatre, puzzles, and, of course, books! Make a trip to a new branch to switch up the toy opportunities.

New Store

Shopping with kids is often not a fun experience; I feel ya. But going to a new store without a shopping list just to look around can be a different story. It could be a good time to utilize my strategies laid out in a previous post where I encourage picture taking as a way to ask for things. Going someplace you’ve discovered but never before made it inside can kill some time in an interesting new way.

Museum

With some preplanning, the library systems offer free entry into many local museums. Many also participate in museums for all for reduced cost to those who qualify. Check the local library and museum websites.

Mall

I have a lot of nostalgia over walking the mall as a kid. Bringing my own kid is wild to think how much it’s all changed. Going in with an expectation, such as getting a pretzel in the food court after an hour, can make exploration of the big open space fun.

Fast Food

My family often plays a quick board game after eating-in at our favorite McDonald’s. For a cheap meal (with those receipt coupons and app deals), we can spend another hour having fun somewhere other than home.

With the change of the weather comes an adjustment in family fun time. I hope some of these ideas can springboard your next time together indoors.
